Q1: What is DALI?

A: DALI stands for "Digital Addressable Lighting Interface," which translates to "Digital Addressable Lighting Interface." It is an internationally open lighting control communication protocol IEC62386, which specifies the digital communication control methods between electronic ballasts, control units, and various sensors. In other words, DALI is a protocol specifically used for lighting control, allowing for individual control of each light, achieving control over brightness, color temperature, color, and grouping of lights, as well as setting different scenes.

 

Q2: What are the characteristics of DALI?

A: The biggest feature of DALI technology is that each individual light fixture has an independent address, allowing for precise dimming control of single lights or groups of lights through the DALI system. The DALI system software can independently address single or multiple fixtures on the same or different circuits, enabling individual control and arbitrary grouping. Therefore, the DALI dimming system is controlled based on DALI addresses, unrestricted by circuits, providing great flexibility for lighting control.

 

Q3: What is the maximum transmission distance of DALI?

A: The maximum transmission distance of DALI is 300 meters. Due to factors such as the resistance of the signal wire, it is recommended that the actual usage distance be kept as short as possible, ideally less than 300 meters.

 

Q4: Why does the light appear dim when the DALI power is connected to the DALI controller, even when turned off?

A: In most cases, this is caused by insufficient creepage distance or insulation level of the light fixture. Grounding the fixture can resolve this issue.

 

Q5: How many fixtures can a DALI system support?

A: A standard DALI system can support up to 64 components with independent addresses. The maximum current provided by the DALI system is 250mA, which is a limitation of the DALI system. If a DALI system exceeds 64 independent addresses or the system current exceeds 250mA, the signal will attenuate, distort, leading to system errors, and some components may not communicate, resulting in unstable system operation.

 

Q6: How to solve the issue if there are more than 64 fixtures in a DALI system?

A: A standard DALI bus link can control 64 lights. If this number is exceeded, another DALI bus link is needed for control.

 

Q7: Can a DALI dimming power supply light up without a signal?

A: Yes. As long as it is correctly connected to the mains, fixtures using DALI power can light up without connecting to the DALI signal line, just like ordinary fixtures (default brightness is full on).

 

Q8: How to select an address when replacing DALI devices?

A: After a DALI dimming control system has been running for a while, certain DALI device failures may occur, necessitating replacement:

①. If only one DALI device is replaced.

DALI devices do not have addresses, groups, scenes, etc., when they leave the factory. You can simply replace the old DALI device with a new one, allowing the system to perform simple addressing. The new DALI device will automatically receive the address of the old device. However, the grouping and scenes need to be reprogrammed. It is best to save the specific values (groups and scenes) of the system after initial debugging, and the parameters of the new device should match those during the initial debugging.

 

②. If two or more DALI devices need to be replaced.

If two or more devices are replaced, the new devices will receive any free address. The devices need to be assigned specific short addresses (the same as the old ones), and each device needs to be replaced individually.

We recommend restoring the new devices to factory settings before installation, i.e., deleting addresses and all set parameters. This way, there will be no issues with duplicate addresses during the debugging process.
